In the manufacture of parts and assemblies, double supports or prisms are often used in operations such as monitoring the radial wobble and shape fluctuations; centering shafts; boring holes; grinding shafts, sleeves, and rings; and milling slots and flattened areas. In these operations, the basing configuration is characterized by the positional angles ψ and α (Fig. 1) of the supporting elements and also the contact point (line) of the measuring or cutting instrument with the surface being monitored or machined. Here shape fluctuations of the base surfaces give rise to component △_ε_(bsh) of the total basing error △ε_b. Depending on the angles ψ and α and the point of contact, this error may be comparable with or even greater than the shape fluctuations of the base surfaces.
