To determine the optimal cutting conditions in the finishing of key components of airplane gas-turbine engines-the turbine disks, manufactured from high-temperature nickel alloys-the parameters of the cut cross section when machining a groove in the disk flange by a groove cutter have been calculated at the Bureau of Metal Cutting, OAO Permskii Motornyi Zavod. Analysis shows that, in finishing of the flange of a turbine disk, the technological parameters (cutting speed and supply velocity) vary over time, with corresponding change in the temperatures and forces in the cutting zone. In the past, the copying method has been used when finishing junctions in the inner groove of the disk flange using a groove cutter. In this method, more of the cutter plate is in contact with the surface being machined at any time, which results in considerable increase in the cutting force and consequent vibration and impairment of machining. In disk operation, surface cracking appears in the region of the junction, on account of stress concentration.
