Strict requirements regarding strength, high-temperature strength, and corrosion resistance are imposed on airplane-motor components, which operate at high temperatures, with complex surface stress, and in aggressive gases. These requirements are best met by high-temperature alloys based on nickel, titanium, and iron. On account of their high strength, these alloys are very difficult to machine and have prompted the search for improvements in tool durability. This is especially important in the manufacture of gas-turbine components on numerically controlled machine tools. The use of lubricant and coolant fluid is a simple and relatively accessible method of extending tool life. However, the available lubricant and coolant fluids have not fundamentally changed the machining of high-temperature alloys, which often proves unsuccessful.
