At manufacturing plants, the wide use of high-speed steel tools (cutters, bits, taps, broaches, gear cutters, etc.) and the ever-rising reliability requirements demand considerable increase in tool life. The wear resistance of cutting tools may be increased by modification of the working surfaces. In the present work, we investigate the influence of various methods on the effectiveness of high-speed steel tools. Laboratory research on the wear resistance of high-speed steel tools with modified working surfaces has been undertaken at the department of machining theory and technology, Ufa State Aviation-Engineering University. Production tests are undertaken at OAO MK Vityaz', Ishimbai.
