Verwood is situated on the heath-Lands of east Dorset and pottery was made here from medieval times right through to the twentieth century. The output from the potteries was most prolific in the mid-eighteenth century when seventeen kilns were producing everyday earthenwares for the Local population. The popularity of light, brightly-glazed Staffordshire ware from 1800 reduced the market for the coarser and rather plain Verwood pottery, although these potteries were stilt able to cater for continuing rural needs for kitchen and dairy wares, as well as costrels and jugs.
