The symposium, organised by Clare Twomey with the University of Westminster, opened up the uncertain relationship between studio ceramics and the ceramics industry. Its purpose was to start building a better understanding of the two aspects of ceramic production with a view to fostering fruitful collaborative relationships. The vexed nature of this relationship is not replicated in other countries. According to Marie Torbensdatter Hermann, working with industry is an expected part of the ceramisfs career development in Denmark. Barnaby Barford commented that the concept of a designer was relatively new until the mid twentieth century, when artists regularly worked with industry in collaboration - Laura Knight and Eric Ravilious are two well-known examples.
