Rubber prices in Malaysia staged a spectacular upsurge in the second half of 2009, especially during the last quarter. The prices closed admirably high for the year at RM9.58/kg for SMR 20 and RM6.08/kg for latex in bulk. The price uptrend continued in January 2010 on near-term supply disruption and strong demand, with expectation of SMR 20 crossing the level of RMlO.OO/kg and latex in bulk of RM7.00/kg. Sure enough, SMR 20 climbed to RMlO.OO/kg on January 12, almost hitting the one-and-a-half year high amid concerns over demand exceeding supply, with latex in bulk rising to RM6.49/kg.
