The effect of talc on the rolling resistance in both carbon black and precipitated silica reinforced tyre-tread compounds was evaluated. The results indicated that 5 phr of ultra-fine microc-rystalline talc could be used as a dispersion aid to reduce the mixing time by 20% of the tyre-tread stock without influencing the dynamic properties at -30°, 0°, and 60°C or the mechanical properties. Talc did not have a significant influence on the cure or viscosity in either system. Although talc had a slight effect on abrasion resistance of black compounds, it did not change the wear performance in precipitated silica reinforced vulcanisates. Talc did not affect the adhesion between the tread compound and the carcass.
