Illinois investment Conti to spend another $129 million on tire plant

MOUNT VERNON, 111.—Continental Tire the Americas L.L.C. plans to pump another $129 million into its growing Mount Vernon tire plant to boost its size, work force and capabilities. The factory, which spans 3.5 million square feet, will be expanded another 200,000 square feet during the next three years. The project during that period will create more than 100 full-time jobs at the facility, which has a work force of about 3,200, according to Plant Manager Benny Harmse. Rising demand for Continental-and General-brand truck tires is behind the expansion, he said, along with new tire production technologies and the need for better complexity management within the factory.
