Effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and Trichoderma harzianum on three species of balcony plants.

In experiments on 3 bedding plant species (Verbena, Torenia and Diascia) propagated from cuttings, the effects of inoculating the rooting substrate (3:1 peat:perlite) with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (Glomus spp.), or Trichoderma harzianum, or bothor spraying plants with Previcur (prothiocarb) fungicide were studied. Mycorrhizal inoculation significantly increased fresh weight, dry weight and total shoot length of Verbena plants and dry weight and total shoot length of Torenia plants. Mycorrhizalinoculation improved leaf colour of all three species, particularly before transplanting. T. harzianum had no effect on any growth parameter nor leaf colour. Inoculating plants with T. harzianum had no detrimental effect on the benefits of mycorrhizal inoculation. Application of Previcur slightly improved leaf colour, and significantly increased total shoot length of Torenia plants.
