BATTERIES: FIVE-FOLD RISE IN WORLD DEMAND FOR LITHIUM ION BATTERIES FORECAST THROUGH 2020--Possibility of supply shortages for lithium and cobalt from 2015

World demand for lithium ion batteries is forecast by Katsuo Seki (Yokohama Advanced Technology Research Centre, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries) to rise five-fold, in terms of storage capacity, from 14,450MWh in 2007 to 78,000MWh in 2020 (Table 1). These figures assume that each sector of the industry grows as expected and that lithium ion batteries prove satisfactory in terms of both cost and technical properties.
