Jug Making

When I make a jug I like to keep the form as crisp and precise as possible -I find that random marks resulting from the making process can often take the eye away from the profile and underlying structure. To achieve this, once I have made the basic form, I throw using a thin metal rib to flatten the surface and take off excess moisture and clay slurry. The stainless steel rib needs to be flexed in order to keep it firm and can be used on curved surfaces as well as straight. If I am making a large number of straight-sided items I use a rib that has a wooden strip bolted to it to keep it rigid and easier to hold.
