ROUTE 100 IN VERMONT IS ONE of the finest drives in New England. This rambling ribbon stretches north from Massachusetts to Canada, winding its way past pastoral farmland and the rugged Green Mountains. The best portion is between Ludlow and Stowe, where the tourist traffic that can occasionally over-whelm the southern part of the state thins out, leaving the road free for some good driving fun. Upon leaving Ludlow, the road passes through the serene Rescue/Echo/Amherst Lakes countryside. Here, you'll be enticed by sweeping bends that will entertain your sporting side. Not far up the road you can satisfy your historical side by taking Route 100A to the birthplace of President Calvin Coolidge. And at the end of Route 100A .you'll find U.S. Route 4 that leads to Woodstock, the quintessential scenic old Vermont town. Woodstock is brimming with boutiques, art galleries, restaurants and upscale inns, but a must-see is EH. Gillingham's, a classic old general store. And don't miss the Billings Farm and Museum.
