TRADE: FOURTH CONSECUTIVE ANNUAL RISE IN RARE METAL EXPORTS

Japanese exports of 70 rare metal products (excluding stainless steel) rose for the fourth consecutive year in 2005, increasing by 24 percent to Yen 655.5B fob. Over the past 15 years, the value of exports of semiconductor materials (high-purity silicon and silicon wafers) has risen by 17 percent py from Yen 38.8B in 1990 to Yen 379.4B in 2005. The share of total exports increased from 32 percent to 58 percent over the same period. Japanese exports of non-semiconductor materials rose by 8.5 percent py between 1990 and 2005, increasing from Yen 81.4B to Yen 276.1 B.
