VALIDATION OF THE NAME ZELTNERA TEXENSIS (GENTIANACEAE)

The name Zeltnera texensis, widely accepted by students of the Gentianaceae but not validly published, is required by several authors for use in works approaching completion. This name is validly published here.Zeltnera texensis (Griseb.) G. Mans, ex J.S. Pringle, comb. nov. Basionym: Erythraea texensis Griseb., Gen. Sp. Gent. 139. "1839" [1838]. Zeltnera texensis (Griseb.) G. Mans., Taxon 53: 734. 2004, comb, not validly published.The authorship of the name Erythraea texensis, basionym of the combination Centaurium texense (Griseb.) Fernald, was attributed to Griseb. ex Hook, by Fernald (1908), Britton and Brown (1913), Turner (1993), and Mansion (2004). According to those authors, thename E. texensis was published in Part 2, page 58, of Hooker's Flora Boreali-Americana (Grisebach 1837), about one year earlier than in Grisebach's (1838) Genera et Species Gentianearum. Actually, no description, under any name, of the species later calledE. texensis, nor any use of the epithet texensis in a relevant context, appears on page58 of Part 2 or anywhere else in the Flora Boreali-Americana. The name E. texensis should be attributed to Griseb., Gen. Sp. Gent. 139. "1839" [1838] (not "ex Hook.").
