Star-crossed sports CAR: Celebrating the 50th anniversary of BMW's sublime 507, with a drive from Verona to the Villa d'Este

THE WHOLE THING WAS QUITE SHAKE-spearean. We were two gentlemen, not necessarily of Verona, but certainly wandering around in Verona, looking for the famous balcony from which the fictitious Julia spoke to the imaginary Romeo. Fellow motor journalist Ken Gross and I found this chosen courtyard on a side street, packed with tourists and festooned with hundreds of lovers' notes and favorite quotations tacked to the old timbers beneath the balcony. Ah, the power of art. Shakespeare could have picked any city in Italy as a setting for his play, but he picked Verona and now you had tourists from Tokyo, Cleveland and Murmansk getting off buses with stars in their eyes, 410 years after the play was written.
