Different publications want different backgrounds. Some prefer 'studio' shots, for which backgrounds should be kept as simple as possible and of neutral colour. White, light and mid-grey, and black work best. A scooped roll of background paper (available from professional photographic suppliers) is a classic set-up, with the roll suspended from a wall on dowelling, or taped to the surface, or pinned to a board. Another option is a covered table top, with a background pinned up immediately behind it, giving a 'horizon' effect. You can use the same or contrasting shades of background. Try putting your object on the table-top corner for a dramatic look. A carefully chosen, neutral, textured surface, such as stone, wood, or slate can also be effective. Alternatively, consider shooting the work in context, making sure that the background never overwhelms the pot. Allow plenty of space around your piece - don't fill the frame. The publication will crop the image as necessary.
