Scotland possesses unique advantages for makers. DawnYoull and Katy West are just two artists who, following MA courses in England, chose to move back to Glasgow - partly because of the vibrant visual art scene that exists there and in Edinburgh. There is a sense of things being possible; Youll recently showed with Washington Garcia, an independent artist-run gallery based in Glasgow, suggesting visual art spaces/organisations are open to presenting work from across fields. Financially it is often more realistic to develop a practice in Scotland as a young artist and to enjoy a relatively high standard of living. The physical place/space and the people all contribute to making the country a desirable location for established makers to move to. In a small community of makers there is perhaps a greater opportunity to fund individuals who would be unsupported in London, where the competition for funds is so high.
