Lake City, COLORADO Enjoy Its Mines, Minerals and Mountains

When mineral collectors and mining historians discuss Colorado's historic mining camps, Lake City is not the first name mentioned. But Lake City's undeserved obscurity is no fault of its own. Instead, it's the product of such factors as a disruptive sequence of mining booms and busts, a relatively modest district output, and a remote mountain location. At an elevation of 8,600 feet in southwestern Colorado's rugged San Juan Mountains, Lake City is an hour's drive from the nearest major highway. It is also the only town in Hinsdale County, which prides itself on being the remotest county in the 48 contiguous states. Hinsdale County has not a single traffic light, only 35 miles of paved roads, and a diminutive population of 800.
