Piston-cylinder apparatus are the state of the art equipment in experimental petrology labs for generating simultaneously pressures and temperatures - covering crust and shallow mantle conditions. Most commercially available piston-cylinder apparatus are based on a construction design described by Boyd and England (1960). These authors presented this design as a facility to perform phase-equilibrium measurements up to 50 kbar (5 GPa) and 1750°C. Recent papers have demonstrated that with small changes of the pressure vessel equipment even higher temperatures up to 3000 K ( Wade and Wood, 2002) and pressures up to 6 GPa can be generated. As a result new high pressure and high temperature materials can be synthesized and their physico-chemical properties can be defined.
