Most of the gemstone news that has come out of Canada during the past decade has been about .diamonds. That's not surprising, because in the wake of spectacular discoveries of rich diamondiferous kimberlite pipes in the early 1990s, Canada has emerged as a world-class source of gem diamonds. Several large mines near the Arctic Circle in Canada's Northwest Territory are now turning out nearly 10 million carats of gem diamonds per year. But now, Canada's good fortune with diamonds seems to be spreading to the field of colored precious gemstones. The 1998 discovery of gem-quality emeralds in the Yukon Territory (see "Yukon Emeralds," March 2004 Rock & Gem) has triggered a succession of new finds. All have been due to the work of 4-year-old True North Gems Inc. based in Vancouver, British Columbia, which has been remarkably successful in exploring for, acquiring, and developing colored precious gemstone sources in Canada and adjacent Greenland.
