Acameo is a type of gem carving that depicts faces or scenes with figures. The design is raised above the background material in a relief style by removing matter from the surrounding surface. The height of the cameo can vary considerably from what is considered a high relief, projecting more than 50% of the depth of the sculpture, to low reliefs, also known as bas-reliefs.
