Mating disruption of grape moth and grape berry moth in 1996 in Switzerland

In 1996, mating disruption to control grape moth Lobesia botrana Den. & Schiff, and grape berry moth Eupoecilia ambiguella Hb. with RAK 1+2 and RAK 2 dispensers was applied in Switzerland on 23 vineyards on a total surface of 463 ha. Reduction of moth catches in pheromone traps was almost total. Average grape damage of first generation, sampled in 24 plots on 43,355 grapes, was only 0,93%. However, damage in some borders locally reached 5-9%. By comparison with untreated plots of the same region, efficacy of mating disruption was 80-90% in plot with 250 dispensers per ha and more than 90% in vineyards with the registrated density of 500 dispensers per ha. In the second generation, a treatment was applied on the border of three vineyards on a totalsurface of 4.8 ha. Average grape damage of the second generation, sampled in 21 plots on 21,823 grapes, was 1.40%. 71.4% of the plots sampled had less than 1% damage, 19.0% had between 1-5%, 4.8% had between 5-10% and 4.8% had more than 10% damage. Emission of attractant from the dispensers was quite constant throughout the season, but dispensers were almost empty at the end of second flight of both species.
