The progress in mechanical harvesting on small farms has been much slower than expected. Even though several models are available, they are operating at only a third of their capacity. What are the problems that are slowing the progress of this operation and what can be done to solve them? This paper considers the technical, logistic, organizational and environmental problems encountered during the last seasons with the SIMON harvester, and puts forward some matters for further discussion. Once thereliability of the harvesters has been established, it seems that the solutions to the problems lie in field preparation, particularly de-rocking, proper field demarcation to reduce operations at the end of rows, and regrouping planters into associationsor cooperatives (CUMA).
