Performance of six imported chilli varieties in two locations in Mauritius

Six hybrid chilli varieties, Indam 5, Indam 6, Indam 9, Indam 42. Indam Jwala and Star 6601 were assessed at Reduit and Richelieu Crop Research Stations. No local check was included in the trial due to lack of a distinct local variety. The objectiveof the trial was to assess the performance of the different varieties in two different locations. Trials were set up both during winter and summer season. The varieties were evaluated for crop yield, number of fruits per plant, plant height, fruit sizeand fruit weight. Among these varieties, Indam 5. Indam 6, Indam 42 and Star 6601 have been found to be promising in terms of high yield (27 - 40t t ha~(-1)), number of fruits per plant (175-185) and quality of fruits. The fruit length and weight of thedifferent varieties lies between 7 - 11 cm and 5 - 9g respectively. Out of these varieties, Star 6601 bears medium size fruit (7 cm in length and 5 g in weight) and also has higher plant height (95 cm). Variety Indam 42 has the highest yield (40 t ha~(-1)) while variety Star 6601 has the highest number of fruits per plant (185). Higher yields have been obtained during the summer months at both research stations.
