Theranostic Nanoparticles for Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most common chronic systemic autoimmune inflammatory disease without cure. However, the current major drugs used for ameliorating RA suffer from systemic effects and low bioavailability, whereas the subsequent high and frequent dosage increases risk of unfavorable side effects. Nanoparticles could enhance the bioavailability, prolong their circulating time, and target to the sites of inflammatory arthritis passively or actively. Hence, they are the ideal drug delivery to overcome the current problem of drug usage. In this review, we summarize and discuss the several major drug delivery platforms based on nanoparticles used for the treatment of RA.
