PROTECTION OF THE RAINFOREST IN EASTERN ZAIRE: THE KAHUZI-BIEGA NATIONAL PARK

摘要

In Africa, the concept of utilizing natural resources in a careful and sustainable manner is virtually unknown and not well understood. It is true that, after gaining their independence, a number of African states have increased the percentage of nature conservation areas in their respective territories, but so far the concepts of nature conservation applied by these countries have paid little attention to the needs and goals of the rural population. In the past, when land and other natural resources were plentifully available, because the population density was low almost everywhere, there was no unacceptable clash between the need to protect ecological diversity and the demands of the rural population.
