Effect of different concentrate and roughage contribution on the digestibility of nutrients and the nutritive value of a ration in the nourishment of the konik polski

The aim of the study has been to describe the effect of different concentrate and roughage contributions on the digestibility of a feeding ration in the nutrition of the konik polski. The experiment was conducted on six horses of the konik polski breed from the Experimental Station in Popielno, according to the Latin square design (3 x 2). Three types of feeding rations (A, B, C), containing different percentage of concentrate and roughage, were tested. 1. in ration A 25% of total protein was supplied by roughage and 75% by concentrate, 2. in ration B 50% of total protein was supplied by roughage and 50% by concentrate, 3. in ration C approximately 75% of total protein was supplied by roughage and 25% by concentrate. A lower contribution of concentrate in a ration caused a decline in the digestibility of nutrients as well as in the energy value. High digestibility of crude fibre and satisfactory digestibility of the other nutrients are maintained if the ratio of roughage to concentrate with respect to total protein is 58%: 42%.
