A successful productivity and competitiveness strategy in the steel shop relies on reliable safety and automation practices. Because the steel shop is a place where ladles containing up to 350 tonnes of liquid steel at between 1500°C and 1600°C are handled, human interventions in the process should be kept at a minimum or even entirely replaced by tools to avoid closer contact with the metal. Such tools include the internet, which makes the on-line access to data and other information a much easier task, wireless technologies for remotely controlling the equipment, and imaging systems as a support to remote operations.
