Delivering more sustainable waste management in Mexico

In previous Special Editions of Resources, Conservation and Recycling, published over the last 3 years (volumes 32 (3/4), 35 (1/2) and 36 (3)), the focus has been primarily on developed countries, formal systems and hi-tech solutions (Read, 2001). This special edition redresses the balance and looks at the legacy of poorly developed and under-funded waste management in a developing country (Wilson et al., 2001), the problems and opportunities presented by informal management systems (Cointreau-Levine et al., 2000), and the progress that is being made in collecting, treating and disposing of municipal solid wastes in Mexico (Buenrostro et al., 2001a).
