We appreciate this expression of interest in this topic, which touches on issues of eponymous designation of disease and the roles and responsibilities of physicians in society, and welcome the opportunity to respond.The facts surrounding Wegener's wartime activities and his involvement in the cited major Nazi organizations are undisputed. As the editorial respondents Grzybowski and Rohrbach point out, many Germans did see the Nazis as the instrument of salvation of Germany. As also well pointed out, the impact of the ideology, inhumanity, and atrocities to come were amply foreshadowed by the publications and actions of its proponents from the inception of the Nazi movement. As we were careful to point out, and as acknowledged by the respondents, we did not link Wegener directly to any war crime, nor did he ever stand trial.
