Heparinized Autologous Blood for Visualization of the Internal Limiting Membrane During Macular Hole Surgery

The blood coating allows excellent visualization of the ILM during its peeling (Figure 2). Pathologic evaluation demonstrates that the ILM is removed, and not just a layer of clotted blood (Figure 3). Excessive fluid flow in the eye caused the blood to be stirred up. This made the technique ineffective both because of reduced visualization through the blood stained vitreous cavity fluid, and because of the washing away of the fine layer of blood cells on the ILM.
