An experiment was conducted in Uttar Pradesh, India, during the 2004 kharif season to study the genetic variability, heritability, genetic advance and character association in 37 rice genotypes. Data were recorded on plant height, 50% flowering, number of effective tillers per plant, number of grains per panicle, fertility percentage, grain yield per plant, 1000-grain weight, kernel length and breadth, and kernel length/kernel breadth ratio. There were highly significant differences among the genotypes for all the traits. The estimates of phenotypic coefficient of variation and genotypic coefficient of variation were of the same magnitude for all the characters except fertility percentage. High heritability was recorded for all the characters, except fertility percentage. Days to 50% flowering, kernel length and plant height exhibited the highest heritability estimates. High heritability accompanied with moderate genetic advance was recorded for days to 50% flowering, plant height and grain yield per plant. Correlation analysis indicated that grain yield showed significant and positive association with number of grains per panicle followed by days to 50% flowering, effective tillers per plant and panicle length..
