Field experiments were conducted during the wet and post-wet seasons of 2002/03 and 2003/04 in Bangalore, Karnataka, India, to study the production potential of various rice-based cropping systems under different fertility levels. The treatments comprised main plot treatments of cropping systems: rice-fallow (C1); rice-rice (C2); rice-soyabean (C3); rice-cowpea (C4); rice-radish (C5); rice-bell pepper (C6); rice-fodder maize (C7); rice-marigold (C8). The subplot treatments comprised: control (F1); 50% recommended dose of fertilizer (F2); 75% recommended dose of fertilizer (F3); 100% recommended dose of fertilizer (F4); 50% recommended dose of fertilizer + 5.0 t Chromolaena odorata compost (F5). Among the main plot treatments, C6 gave the highest mean rice grain equivalent yield (181.00 q/ha) and land use efficiency (75.20%). C7 gave the highest mean system productivity (25 948 kg/ha), production use efficiency (111.00 kg ha-1 day-1), digestible proteins (1372.00 kg/ha) and digestible carbohydrate (8961) kg/ha. C8 gave the highest net returns (Rs. 66 573/ha). F4 gave the highest mean system productivity (13 011 kg/ha) and rice grain equivalent yield (116.51 q/ha)..
