Flexible hardcoats and substrates coated therewith

Substitutes that do not shatter glass are in widespread use. Synthetic polymers are used for transparent glazing in public transportation vehicles, lenses for eye glasses and other optical instruments. However, one drawback is the ease with which they mar and scratch with everyday contact of abrasive materials and weathering which can impair visibility. Inclusion of silica in the protective topcoat is well known but this can reduce the flexibility of the structure which makes bending or reshaping of the plastic sheeting difficult.
