Resolution to revise the General Product Safety Directive and market surveillance

In a European Parliament Resolution on the 8th March 2011 it was recognised that there is a need to revise the General Product Safety Directive and market surveillance. It is proposed that the European Commission establishes a common European framework for market surveillance concerning all products on the internal market or entering the EU market. It is also proposed that Member States introduce penalties, including heavy fines, for economic operators who deliberately introduce dangerous or non-compliant products into the single market. It is suggested that Member States share product safety related inquiries and studies with other Member States. The Commission is urged to establish a Public Consumer Product Safety Information database, including a platform for complaints.
