The most frequently used cationic photoinitiators are the sulphonium salts and the iodonium salts. For adhesive applications and especially hot melt adhesives, sulphonium salts are preferred due to their higher thermal stability. This paper reports the synthesis of a series of soluble and red-shifted sulphonium salts, prepared by the one-step reaction of a substituted thioxanthone and diphenylsulphoxide using Eaton's reagent (phosphorus pentoxide/methanesulfonic acid 1:10).
