The use of dispersants in the mixing of aqueous slurries of pulverised materials, such as clays, silicates, chalk, carbon black etc, is well known to improve the workability (kneadability, spreadability, sprayability or flowability). The dispersants are capable of breaking up agglomerates and are used in the production of building materials, such as cement and lime. More water is used than would be required for the hydration or hardening process and this can result in cavities in the concrete body leading to poorer mechanical strength when hardened.
