Comparative phycochemical investigation of hydrocarbons content on some marine seaweeds algae.

Hydrocarbons isolated from three green algae (Enteromorpha intestinalis, Ulva rigida and U. fasciata) and one red alga (Hypnea cornuta) were qualitatively and quantitatively analysed using the gas liquid chromatography (GLC) technique. Eighteen hydrocarbons were detected in the four specimens of seaweeds (dodecane, tetradecane, pentadecane, hexadecane, heptadecane, octadecane, nonadecane, eicosane, hencosane, docosane, tricosane, tetracosane, pentacosane, hexacosane, heptacosane, octacosane, nonacosane and triacontane). U. fasciata was characterized by the presence of triacontane (73.38%); this compound was absent in other specimens. Docosane was abundant in E. intestinalis (39.99%), H. cornuta (32.17%), U. fasciata (16.22%) and U. rigida (10.61%). The amount of octacosane was highest (83.03%) in U. rigida. Dodecane was most abundant in E. intestinalis (31.11%). The analysis indicated that the samples are polluted and the algae can be used as biological indicators of pollution.
