Composting as one of the ways to decrease toxic gas emissions, particularly ammonia, from degradable processes into the atmosphere was investigated. Two composting plants (JENA and HUCUL in Czech Republic) where rapid composting was carried out using identical rotary digger were compared. Results of the comparison showed that the compost from leaves, grass and manure (336 g NH3/tonne of compost) had a different emission from that of composted horse manure (504 g NH3/tonne of compost). These emissions were comparable with emissions during manure storage (e.g., pig manure 248 g NH3/tonne of manure), because during handling of manure or compost (field spreading), the spread compost emission was 75% lower than that of the spread manure. This confirmedthe link betweennitrogen and composting, and that this process was one way to reduce emissions.
