To the Editor: The symptom of painful muscle cramps is seen in a significant portion of patients with cirrhosis with prevalence ranging anywhere from 31% to 88% in various studies (1, 2). Muscle cramps are particularly troublesome for patients with cirrhosis while on diuretics or after a large volume paracentesis. Various therapies such as quinine, albumin infusion, vitamin E supplementation, anti-spasmodic drugs are used for muscle cramps. Some of these treatments have significant side-effects and are not very effective. We present 2 patients who had significant improvement in muscle cramps with an alternative safe treatment.
