Further to the announcement of a new professional organisation, the World Medical Device Organization, we are writing to express our concerns on the philosophy it is using to differentiate itself from existing professional bodies.The new organisation has been founded on a perceived need to separate the approach to medical device technology from that of pharmaceuticals.It is true that for some authorities, the system for regulating medical devices and pharmaceuticals differs. There are good reasons for this. However, the common regulatory professional standards and approaches to all forms of healthcare products and the common professional characteristics required in both the pharmaceutical and medical technology sectors should be recognised.
