Simpler mining regulation framework to encourage investment

A SURVEY CONDUCTED last year by international accounting and consulting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers found investment in Indonesia's minerals industry was sluggish. Although Indonesia generated record export revenue from the sector in 2006, this was achieved largely on the back of high commodity prices rather than increased investment. However, the Indonesian Government is taking steps to stimulate foreign investment witha a simpler regulation framework expected to be passed by the Indonesian legislative by the end of 2007 (notwithstanding delays in the execution of the draft mining law are also discouraging investors, the Investor Daily reported in March 2007).
