The economic situation deteriorated markedly in the latter part of 2008. Retail sales volumes rose by a modest 0.5 per cent, consisting of a 0.9 per cent rise in food retail sales and a 0.3 per cent drop in non-food retail sales, between September and November, according to National Statistics. One by one, several of the world's banks have collapsed, sending Shockwaves through many advanced economies, with the downward trend accelerating radically since the collapse of Lehman Brothers in September 2008.
