For many years, well-known manufacturers of refractory materials for metallurgical technologies have spared no effort to promote mixtures for fabrication of refractory linings by the dry-vibration compaction method to the domestic market in Russia. Advanced enterprises in Russia (for example, the AvtoVAZ Joint-Stock Co.) make good use of such mixtures, for example, in making the lining for the bath of vertical and horizontal type LFR-45 induction furnaces for holding liquid iron at heat. Here the conventional technique for placing the mixture is layer-by-layer packing by means of a pneumatic rammer. The Eastern Institute of Refractories Research and Production Association has had many-years (since the mid-1980s) experience in developing, testing, and putting into service dry sinterable mixtures for making the lining of various metallurgical units by the vibration compaction technique - for example, SK-130-type steel-teeming ladles (of 130 tons capacity) at the Amurstal' plant. Owing to the knowhow gained, the Eastern Institute of Refractories could develop, on order from the AvtoVAZ JSC, a corundum-based mixture as a competitive replacement of the material available from foreign manufacturers.
