摘要

Chris de Winter Hebron investigates an unusual aspect of rail interior seating design, and finds it to have both a longer ancestry and more continuing uses than one might expect. WE ARE ALL FAMILIAR with the mass-transit seating layout that places inward-facing seats around the compartment edges. While it reduces the seating capacity, it more than makes up for it m increased standing room. On systems where journeys are typically very short, the comfort-for-capacity trade-off is acceptable - but surely such a low-density seating design would be a non-starter on long-distance expresses?
