Telematics in railway operations: Potential, prospects and barriers

Telematics systems for railway applications have now reached a high level of technical maturity. They are already capable of satisfying most customer requirements in a manner that suits the individual case. User groups can choose between various manufacturers of telematics systems, offering highly individualized solutions in their IT architecture. High reliability and availability characterize the wireless communication between the telematics system and the fixed infrastructure, the available sensor interfaces and the telematics systems themselves.
