The loads acting on railway passengers and payloads are essentially determined by the rolling properties of wheelsets, which result from the interaction between the wheels and the rails. Both the profitability of the railway operation (and especially the outlay on maintenance) and its safety depend heavily on the rolling quality of the wheelsets. It follows from this that permanent monitoring is a fundamental requirement for a modern railway system (high-speed TSI). This article presents a method for assessing the rolling quality of wheelsets by processing axle-bearing acceleration signals using a Karhunen Loeve (KL) transformation.
