Amtrak's head of design fights an endless battle against physical constraints in a bid to beat the airlines. Few rail designers have such a wide brief as Duncan Copland, Amtrak's director of industrial design. "If you see it, touch it or sit on it, we do it," he explains. In practice, that includes not only the obvious items such as seats and fabrics but also galleys, rest rooms, lockers, carpets and bedrooms. He even gets his hands on the US giant's next-generation, high-speed trains, which are currently under development.
