If a large share of the forecast additional freight traffic between now and 2020 is to be transported by rail, there is going to be a need for more or less revolutionary bogies for freight wagons, which will have to be considerably quieter and have a much improved productivity compared with today's ones. The "LEILA bogie" ("LEILA-DG" in German) is a project supported by Germany's Federal Research Ministry ("BMBF") for the development of a cross-anchor bogie with inside axle bearings, which, in addition to the attributes already mentioned, will cause less wear between wheels and rails. Since the prototype is not yet ready for testing, the comparison presented in this article is based on the results of simulations.
